The Younger Stories.

I recently finished watching Zootopia (I know I'm late to the party but to be fair I'll use my O'levels as an excuse) and while there was plenty of different aspects of it that kept my head up and my eyes thin with a smile, the movie very much didn't surprise much in the way that I had heard many people rave about it.

While the themes of racism and discrimination were more than heavy handed, I wasn't blown away or particularly amazed at the themes they were weaving into it - after all it is a kids movie. Instead I took a greater liking and appreciation as to the differences they set up their story compared to many more teenager to adult oriented films.

I particularly enjoyed the portrayal of the central conflict of Judy Hopps' character arc. Her story for the uninitiated was about solving a missing animals case as a the first rabbit police officer while faced with opposition from her superiors and society as a whole.

While the goal is laid out quite plainly, I quite enjoyed the directive nature of how the stakes of her story were brought to the audience's attention. You see, the story starts by establishing the personal context of how Hopps had been working her whole life for this job, but what give's it urgency is the arbitrary time limit given by the police chief. Which is only later 'revealed' to be on the basis of just pure discrimination.

I though that the interlinking of the plot, character and themes of the story was excellently done and not seen enough in stories these days.
